This page describes some best practices that Monaco Editor hosts can implement to make the editor accessible for all.
1. Define keybindings for your contributed actions
When adding actions to the editor (e.g. via addAction
), please consider defining a keybinding for them. Even if you choose not to do so, the Command Palette (F1 or Alt+F1 in IE) will show your contributed action and thus make it accessible to keyboard-only users.
2. Decide what you want to do w.r.t. High Contrast
On Edge, when Windows is configured to run with a High Contrast Theme, and the editor is configured with a base theme of vs
or vs-dark
, the editor will react and respect the colors defined by the native High Contrast Theme. This works because Edge exposes -ms-high-contrast:active
in a media query.
Please consider other users that might be using other Operating Systems or browsers. For them, we ship an out-of-the-box high contrast theme, hc-black
. You can expose switching to this theme in your UI or settings if you would like to be accessible to e.g. your Chrome users. Even if you choose not to do so, the editor ships an action "Toggle High Contrast Theme" that your users can trigger to switch the editor to our out-of-the-box high contrast theme.
3. Use the ariaLabel
editor/diff editor options
Set the option ariaLabel
to a short and friendly description (e.g. a filename) for the contents of the editor.
4. Recommend your NVDA users to update to NVDA 2017.3 or higher
NVDA 2017.3 increases NVDA's timeout for receiving a caret move event from 30ms to 100ms. This version is the first one where the built-in timeout is increased from 30ms to 100ms.
5. Do you have a way to detect screen readers on your runtime / Do you have a user setting for it?
Accessibility best practices dictate that applications should be accessible by default, and that no special behaviour should be implemented for accessibility purposes. I would invite the authors of the best practices to try to write a Screen Reader friendly code editor using w3c's ARIA :).
Anyways, the state of the art is lacking. Here's an example: there is no way to communicate editor wrapping points to Screen Readers, and they will quickly get confused when pressing for example arrow down in a wrapped line; they will expect the system caret to move to the next line, and we will move the system caret to the same model line, at a different column (since the line is wrapped); so, when we know a Screen Reader is connected to an editor, we disable wrapping.
If you have a user setting (like e.g. Google Docs) or run in an environment where it is possible to find out if a Screen Reader is attached (like e.g. Electron or a WebBrowser control), then please configure the editor with accessibilitySupport: "on"
. Even if you don't do this, your users will be let know in the editor's aria label that they can optimize the editor by themselves using Alt+F1 (or Ctrl+F1 in IE) and following the directions in there.
6. Do you have documentation for your product?

to point to your specific Accessibility documentation. You can test this by using Alt+F1 (or Ctrl+F1 in IE) and pressing Ctrl+H or Cmd+H.
